Week 2 Math & Art

After this weeks discussion of mathematics and art, I found it very intriguing how both correlate with one another and how their relationship goes hand in hand. Before learning about this extraordinary relationship I never though of art to be so mathematically involved, but once I understood the relationship of the two it made a lot of sense.

What is really interesting is how Brunelleschi came up with the first formulation of linear perspective. His understanding of linear perspective was that there should be a single vanishing point to which all parallel lines in the planes converge. Brunelleschi use math to create depth in a painting, before the understanding of linear perspective pictures were flat and depth did not exist. By looking at a painting with depth I wouldn't have realize how much math had gone into the painting which ultimately controlled the position of the spectator.

An image that stood out to me in lecture was the floor with square tiles. Alberti uses the squared tiles as an example of understanding mathematics and perspective. Alberti explains "perspective is necessary in order to understand painting" he also mentions that "a painting is the intersection of a visual pyramid at a given distance". When looking at this image of the square tiles its so easy to look pass the mathematical process that when into creating it, it truly gives the spectator an honest perspective of the image.

  1. Great insight Oliver! Linear perspective in art goes hand in hand with the fourth dimension that was in Henderson's paper. I would encourage you to add more on how math and art apply to your life this week so we can learn more about you.

  2. Great job Oliver. I am excited by the enthusiasm you share in your blog about this topic. I like the structure of the blog with the strong introduction and then two very good examples. I suggest adding one more picture to your future blogs to make it three in total. Keep up the good work.
