Week 3 Blog

In this weeks lecture Professor Vensa about industrialization and how the Chinese created the gate way for mass production. Professor Vensa explains how "printing press was invented by the Chinese in 1040, it was not invented in the West until 1450 by Johannes Gutenberg" (Lecture, 1). The Printing press paved the way for mass production and allowed new ideas and ideology to spread throughout the world. In 1913 Henry Ford came up with the assembly line, "his innovation reduced the time it took to build a car from more than 12 hours to two hours and 30 min" (Fords assembly line, History.com). This innovative idea has forever changed the way a product is mass produced.

Walter Benjamin on the other hand, believes mass production is bad for the authenticity of a product. Benjamin explains "the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits the are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impeding in the ancient craft of the beautiful"(Benjamin). Benjamin believes that mass production takes away the artistic element that goes into the production.

I Robot is a movie that takes place in 2035 where robots are the servers of humanity. The main character, Del Spooner, was rescued by a robot in a car crash. While trying to save a 12-year old girl the robot rescued him and left the girl to die. Spooner distrust the robots, and doesn't believe they can protect the humans. One scene that stood out to me was when Spooner walks through the robot factory and finds thousands mass produced.

  1. I found your connection to iRobot to be fascinating. I feel like the connection to art and technology in that movie alone could be a whole class topic, let alone a single blog. It was very interesting to think about that
